Mr. Cory Sutherland, P. Eng. (Canada), is currently the Manager of Mechanical Integrity for APTECH Engineering Services (Petrochemical Unit, Houston, USA) where he is in charge of all technical projects. Before joining APTECH, he was the Manager of the Metallurgical Services (including Engineering Consultancy) for BMT Houston where he was in charge of all Metallurgical works. Mr. Sutherland has over 25 years of practical experience in Metallurgy, Corrosion and Prevention of Failures.

  • Technical Supervisory and Managerial Experience, In House and On-Site for Metallurgical Services/Consultancy

  • Evaluation of Casting, Forging, Electroplating, and Hot Dip Galvanizing Factories, China, used on products supplied to the US

  • Remaining Life Estimation of High Temperature Components

  • Experience in using SEM and semi-quantitative EDS techniques

  • Experience in Various Engineering tasks and report writing

  • Writing of Welding Procedures for Various Metals

  • Inspection for Certification of Cranes and Heavy Equipment

During his career life, Mr. Sutherland worked for many international companies as Engineering Manager, Laboratory Manager, Metallurgical Services Manager, Consulting Metallurgical Engineer, Failure Metallurgist, Corrosion Supervisor, Inspector, Metallurgist and Field Engineer. He has performed numerous projects such as:-

  • BP Amoco - API 579 Fitness-for-Service (FFS) Projects:  2 Fire Damage Assessment Projects within the US at two different facilities.

  • Valero (Ultramar Diamond Shamrock) - API 579 Fitness-for-Service Project:  Fire Damage Assessment Project in the US.

  • Solex Energy - API 579 Fitness-for-Service Project: Fire Damage Assessment and Root-Cause-Analysis in Canada.

  • Numerous Tank, Vessel, Specialized NDE Inspections, RBI work for Shell (Canada), Syncrude, Exxon, Chevron-Phillips, GE, Enbridge, Koch Oil, Atrium, Alberta-Pacific (AlPac), Premcor, Huntsman, Tesoro.

  • Quality Assurance and Training for Welding Inspectors in mainland China for various US Companies (i.e. Scaffold and Valve Companies - Beric-Davis, Zytech, Brand Services, Direct Scaffold, etc.)

Mr. Sutherland is the author of numerous Failure Investigation and Metallurgical Evaluation (500 to 600) for clients throughout North America, Europe, and Asia (i.e. Exxon, Enbridge, Technip-Coflexip, FMC SOFEC, Tenaris, Bechtel, Global Industries, J.Ray McDermott, FAA, etc.).
